Schubert: Fierrabras

Fierrabras of 1823 is the last of Franz Schubert’s stage works. Rarely performed to this day, this heroic-romantic opera has now been staged for the first time ever at the Salzburg Festival by famous director Peter Stein. Based on an old French 12th-century epic, the plot depicts the military conflict between Christians and Moors at the time of Charlemagne – as a backdrop to stories of love and friendship that prove to be stronger than war and hatred of otherness. The strong cast includes the “marvellously expressive miracle Dorothea Röschmann” (Die Zeit) and “Michael Schade, who exudes his exceptional tenor in Fierrabras’s heroic arias” (Der neue Merker). Under the energetic baton of lngo Metzmacher, the Vienna Philharmonic unfold “the melos, the poetry, the sweetness and the dramatic force of Schubert’s highly refined and atmospheric sound worlds” (Kleine Zeitung) in highly romantic fashion.

When Jimmy finds out the Twonkies become dangerous monsters when exposed to music, he and his friends must round them up and send them back to space before it's too late.

BBC Proms: Sondheim's 80th Birthday

Marking the 80th birthday of one of Broadway's great innovators, the first ever all-Sondheim Prom at the Royal Albert Hall. The concert includes excerpts from hit shows A Little Night Music, Sweeney Todd and Into the Woods performed by a starry cast of leading figures of the opera and theatre worlds with Bryn Terfel, Maria Friedman, Simon Russell Beale and some special guests. Le Corsaire

At the Opéra National de Bordeaux, the curtain rises on a dazzling new production of Le Corsaire by the marvelous José Carlos Martínez, brought to life by the opera’s ballet company and the Orchestre National Bordeaux Aquitaine. The ballet follows the epic tale of daring pirate Conrad, who falls in love with the beautiful Medora and sets out to rescue her from captivity. Brimming with romance, adventure, and fantasy, the performance features Martínez's dynamic choreography inspired by Marius Petipa’s classic work. Drawing on Lord Byron’s eponymous poem, the libretto by Jules-Henry Vernoy de Saint-Georges and Joseph Mazilier is beautifully matched by the expressive and stirring musical score of Adam, Delibes, Drigo, and Pugni.

Heartache

Set in a derelict theater, “Heartache” deploys tensely expressive movement in a darkly playful take on the dynamics of seeing and being seen. At once kitschy and confrontational, the dancers move with deadpan gazes through tight trios with razor-sharp precision and evocative gestures. Glimpses of private moments and vivid bodily imagery highlight the tension between the individual and society.

Verdi Otello

Desdemona in Verdi's Otello was a career role for soprano Renata Tebaldi, from her first operatic performance outside of Italy to her final appearance on the opera stage. Between those landmarks she performed the role nearly 100 times all over the world and made studio audio recordings that became reference recordings for the role. This 1962 production with the Deutsche Oper Berlin and Giuseppe Patane was planned as a media event from the outset and blessedly captures a consummate artist in a signature role at the peak of her gifts.
