Wende's Vrijplaats: The Making of

Today is an important day in the agenda of singer Wende. Her show Vrijplaats premieres in the Royal Theater Carré in Amsterdam, a concert that she will perform no less than 22 times and that brings her back to the basics: two pianos and a song. But don't think that this is just a matter of sitting and playing. The documentary about Vrijplaats shows what the creative process of months leading up to the big premiere looks like. With guest appearances by Maan and Merol and a role as art director for Sef.

Metal Messiah

A bizarre sci-fi rock opera like little else being produced under the banner of Canadian film at the time, Metal Messiah is about an enigmatic metallic-skinned stranger trying to stop society's self-destructive obsession with rock and roll. Anchored in Toronto's live music scene if the late 1970s, this dystopian parable was the feature film debut of local music impresario and director Tibor Takács. Working with screenwriter Stephen Zoller, Takács' film is a crudely crafted, episodic work that plays out like a glam version of Amos Poe's avant-punk NYC flick The Foreigner (1978), but with even more ambition, attempting to scale to the bombastic rock opera heights of films like Phantom of the Paradise (1974) and Tommy (1975). Four Daughters

A revisionist twist on Cinderella with an all-black cast and set in Harlem during WWII. Cindy is a country bumpkin who moves from South Carolina to live with her father and his new family. When her stepmother and two stepsisters refuse to take her to the Sugar Hill Ball, her draft-dodging, chauffeur neighbor whips up a little "magic" and at the ball she catches the eye of the richest man in Harlem.

Destiny

A young woman in love with a composer is forced by her mother to take a rich suitor. When the two lovers are reunited years later, happiness is theirs for the taking, but a tragedy happens that changes everything. Robert Carsen’s premiere of Destiny opened the 2020 edition of the Janáček Brno Festival (International Opera Award winner 2019). It comprises some of Janáček’s most magnificent music, which sways from the peaks of romantic rapture to the depths of desperation and back again.

Robot Love

Inspired, in part, by the cover of Megatron Man, Patrick Cowley’s archetypal Hi-NRG album, Robot Love is a celebration of the playful, synthetic, party-driven hedonistic culture of disco. A toy robot is seen dancing in ever-more elaborate and over-stimulating fantasy discos, and drifting and spinning in psychedelic wormholes. Essentially a music video for the Austrian band Ganymed’s absurd 1978 song, the video is playful and opulent, presenting a night at the disco as a mind-expanding trip to an alternate universe.
