Bolshoi Ballet: Jewels

George Balanchine's jewel-themed triptych, strikingly choreographed to the music of Faure, Stravinsky and Tchaikovsky. This three act masterpiece is renowned as the world's first full-length abstract ballet. The Russian-born co-founder of the New York City Ballet, Balanchine was inspired by the artistry of jewellery designer Claude Arpels to create a trio of distinct movements revealing the essence of each precious stone. Each part also evokes three different cities: Paris, New York and St. Petersburg. 'Emeralds' was conceived as a tribute to the French romantic school, with music by Gabriel Faure. The fiery and energetic 'Rubies' taps into the rich tradition of Broadway musicals, with music by Stravinsky. 'Diamonds' honours the grandeur of Imperial Russia and the Maryinsky Theater, choreographed to the music of Tchaikovsky. With its jewel-like costumes, this is a celebration of the influences on the choreographer who was described as the father of American ballet.

The epic covers the life and death of the 15th-century soldier and politician, Hunyadi László, son of János Hunyadi who defended Hungary against the attacks of the Ottoman Turks. When the new weak King, László V, takes a shine to Mária, László's fiancée, the young man is arrested and his fate is sealed. The executioner’s axe falls - several times - on one of opera’s most grizzly finales.

Next, the Charleston, with cut-out animation of a singer and dancers. Dixieland and more cut-out animation; the crooner/love ballad; 50's doo-wop; and finally, rockabilly.

Rodney, one of Hollywood's most sought-after directors, puts his next movie on hold to work on his passion project, directing a Broadway musical. An open call audition in New York City delivers a cast of up-and-coming Broadway performers, including Aster, a talented newcomer who seems to be perfect for the lead role. Rehearsals begin and Aster soon realizes she may be in over her head. Even with help from her cast mates including Danica, the ultimate triple threat, and Corey, her love interest in the show (and maybe outside of it too), Aster cant seem to make Rodney happy. Things only get worse as the show loses investors, the sets and costumes are trapped on a boat, and Aster accidentally pushes Corey off the stage.

Karel Gott's Christmas concert in 2005 was recorded in a studio in Kavčí Hory, with an audience, but that did not detract from the excellent atmosphere. The singer himself hosted the concert and personally introduced his guests, who included Jiří Korn with 4TET, Věra Gondolánová, the Polish girl group The Sound Office, and master impersonator Vladimír Hron. The exclusive guest was world-renowned opera singer Eva Urbanová. And Gott's greatest hits in new arrangements were also featured.
