The Wars

In The Wars photographer Oscar van Alphen combines an adapted version of Georges Bataille's text 'Madame Edwarda' with images drawn from his archive. 'Madame Edwarda' is a story with no beginning nor an end. A male first-person narrator and a prostitute encounter in Paris by night. It's a story about lust, power, anxiety, desire, and humiliation. Van Alphen uses Bataille's text as a metaphor for the perversity of social structures, for the uncontrollability of political and economic power, and the effects of these on human dignity. He juxtaposes pictures from the decaying and almost deserted industrial regions in Northern France and of the 1968 student rebellion in Paris, with the pornographic text from the first years of World War II.

The Man with the Golden Arm

When illegal card dealer and recovering heroin addict Frankie Machine gets out of prison, he decides to straighten up. Armed with nothing but an old drum set, Frankie tries to get honest work as a drummer. But when his former employer and his old drug dealer re-enter his life, Frankie finds it hard to stay clean and eventually finds himself succumbing to his old habits.

The Weak Point

Before getting to the security office, the culprit is set up and left alone with his interrogator for an hour so that maybe they could get the information they need. That hour they spend together means something different to each of them and they both glimpse at their different stages of life in one day and live their lives backwards. The two men stroll in an unknown city and come to their young days. The time ends. The interrogator who’s been impressed by the culprit, tries to get him back to life and since he doesn’t succeed in doing so, he goes mad.

The guests at Count Otto von Trepow's East Prussian estate Gross-Ehrenfeld are Lord and Lady Ruthven, Mr Hendriks with his wife and foster-daughter Mariska, a gypsy they adopted years ago, Kundry, the fiancée of Otto's son Bernhard, and Count Stanislaus Larinski, who claims to be a Polish revolutionary wanted by the Russian government. A boating trip is organized but ends when the motor breaks down. While waiting for it to be repaired, the guests go to an inn run by Andreas and his daughter Käthe. Hendriks goes for a walk, sees the boat come back and that a man with a bent back leaves it. He notices that Kundry is afraid of Bernhard.

Gerónima

Gerónima was a real "Mapuche" Indian woman that lived in Argentinian Patagonia. She lived with her four sons in a poor little house in the dry lands her family had owned for generations. In 1976, during the military dictatorial government that disappeared 30.000 people, she and her four sons were visited by social workers. Worried about Geronima's poor conditions of existence, including health, they took the whole family to the hospital "to help them", with unexpected tragic consequences. The film that reconstruct Geronima's story is based in a interview realized by a physician while she was at the hospital. The main actress, Luisa Calcumil is also a real "Mapuche" woman, as well as Aimé Painé, the singer that interprets the authentic "Mapuche" songs the film includes.
