Drunk Stoned Brilliant Dead

A look at the history of the American comedy publication and production company, National Lampoon, from its beginning in the 1970s to 2010, featuring rare and never before seen footage, this is the mind boggling story of The National Lampoon from its subversive and electrifying beginnings, to rebirth as an unlikely Hollywood heavyweight, and beyond. A humour empire like no other, the impact of the magazines irreverent, often shocking, sensibility was nothing short of seismic: this is an institution whose (drunk stoned brilliant) alumni left their fingerprints all over popular culture. Both insanely great and breathtakingly innovative, The National Lampoon created the foundation of modern comic sensibility by setting the bar in comedy impossibly high.

Hard Hat Riot

2025

On May 8, 1970, construction workers violently clashed with students demonstrating against the Vietnam War in lower Manhattan. The workmen, who came to be known as “hardhats,” were at the cutting edge of a new kind of class war. With the war in Vietnam raging on, it was the sons of the working class who were doing most of the fighting. Workmen saw the protesting students as privileged “draft dodgers” disparaging the country and those who fought for it. On the other side, many student activists saw the workers as pawns, unwilling to see the changes that America needed. Hard Hat Riot tells the story of a struggling metropolis, a flailing president, a divided people, and a bloody juncture when the nation violently diverged ― culminating in a new political and cultural landscape that radically redefined American politics and foreshadowed the future.

One of the darkest chapters of the communist dictatorship of the 1950s was the Hortobágy labour camps, where thousands of people were deported without any trial, mostly families living on the western and southern borders. The complex of institutions, which was established in the farmland of the lowlands in strict secrecy, existed until 1953, but even after that it was not openly discussed. The film is based on real documents and recollections, which make the story real and true to life, told from the point of view of the thirteen-year-old son of a displaced family. Andris's family is summoned one morning by the ÁVH. An evacuation order has been issued and the whole family must leave their home. They are given an hour to pack their 50 kg of personal belongings, and the wagons are already on their way to the unknown, to Hortobágy, where they will be sent to a large camp.
