The Mystery of Jade

The Imperial Astronomer suddenly commits suicide in the bustling city. Before committing suicide, he kept chanting, "Pisces is now in chaos, and the mirror is full of vitality!" Emperor Renzong gives Bao Zheng three days to solve the case. Bao Zheng and Zhan Zhao goes to the Supreme Court to investigate the case, but the Supreme Court is deliberately making things difficult for them. Despite this, Bao Zheng still finds important clues. The Pisces Jade Pendant that is supposed to be on the Imperial Astronomer goes missing, and the vice minister of the Supreme Court is also exhibiting the same strange behavior as the Imperial Astronomer before his suicide. The legend of the Pisces Jade Pendant surfaces, but there are still no leads, and there is only one day left before the deadline...

Williamsburg Restored

This documentary which opens with a ten-minute period drama about the importance of Williamsburg in 1774, explains the mission of John D. Rockefeller, Jr., and Dr. W.A.R. Goodwin in the 1920s to restore Williamsburg to a colonial American icon. Through the painstaking research of curator, historians, and architects, the town's restoration plan is mapped out. Construction tradesmen from the twentieth century transform rundown exteriors into period edifices. Interiors are modified and restored to livable, sometimes elegant, period condition. This vast undertaking leads to mid-century historical interpretation about the importance of the people and ideas of Williamsburg that forged a new nation.

In 'Nefandus' two men travel by canoe down the Don Diego river in the Colombian Caribbean, a landscape of 'wild' beauty. The men, an indigenous man and a Spanish speaking man, tell stories about 'unspeakable sins' and 'abominable crimes'; acts of sodomy that took place in the Americas during the conquest. It has been documented that Spanish conquistadors used sex as a weapon of domination, but what is known about homoerotic pre-Hispanic traditions? How did Christian morality, as taught by the Catholic missions and propagated through war during the Conquest, transform the natives' relationship to sex? 'Nefandus' attentively looks at the landscape for clues of stories that remain untold and have been stigmatized in historical accounts.

A Mormon Maid

This silent melodrama is set against the 1840s westward migration of the Mormons. Dora, a young woman, and her family are saved from an Indian attack by a Mormon community traveling to Utah. They join the wagon train. Dora is pursued by two men, one a recent convert, the other a scheming elder with a stable of wives. The Mormon elder wants her in his harem. When the mother kills herself from revulsion toward polygamy, the daughter must consider her own future and the man she loves. One of Mae Murray's few surviving films, this was intended by Robert Leonard to be a thoughtful drama about the goods and evils of Mormonism, but today it is generally considered pure anti-Mormon propaganda.

A film about the early chamber music ensemble "Kurant." Based on filming from 1986-1988. A concert featuring the ensemble was filmed in Leningrad, at the S. P. von Derviz mansion at 33 Galernaya Street, (then the Mayak club of the Admiralty Plant, 33 Krasnaya Street). Part of the filming took place inside the Rotunda at 57 Gorokhovaya Street. In the late 1960s and 1970s, the Rotunda regularly hosted informal gatherings of Leningrad youth. In the 1970s and 1980s, the Rotunda gained fame as a cult venue, attracting representatives of various subcultures—rockers, hippies, and punks.

Mazeppa, Folk Hero of the Ukraine

The film tells the story of Ivan Mazeppa, a Ukrainian page at the Polish court who has an affair with the young wife of a much older count. Outraged when he learns of the incident, the nobleman has Mazeppa tied naked to a wild horse which is then released into the wilderness. The bulk of the poem describes the long hazardous journey during which Mazeppa almost dies twice but ultimately survives and returns to his native Ukraine.
