Madagascar: The Red Island Uprising

On March 29, 1947, peasants armed with sticks and knives attacked the French garrisons in Madagascar. The revolt would end twenty months later with the death of the last insurgents, shot down by the expeditionary force. France, accustomed to memory lapses, knew nothing of this insurrection and its trail of torture and abuses. In Madagascar, well after independence, the events of 1947 were never discussed. For more than a generation, parents refused to speak of them to their children. It wasn't until the 1980s that the silence was broken.

This film is Taiwan’s first protest music documentary, examining Jiao Gong Band 交工樂隊. Jiao Gong Band initially received attention from their efforts opposing the Meinong Dam project. After a brief pause in the Dam issue, Jiao Gong began following farm and farming issues, with their musical style quickly gaining increased popularity. This film discusses the uneasy situation faced by Taiwan’s farm youth. The youth that sets out to the city seeking to develop themselves carry feelings of homesickness from leaving their farm and land; on returning to their hometown after the bubble economy, they continue to push the elder generation to leave the village. Aside from this, because of their difficult social status, farm youth can often only search for Southeast Asian “foreign brides” when seeking marriage. Within the film, new residents (新住民) discuss their feelings and mindset in moving to Taiwan and collaborate with Jiao Gong throughout the album’s recording process.

Antonio Divino

This short documentary, with its aim of exposing the festival from the perspective of Andalusian culture and anthropology, delves into the complexities of this celebration. Understanding how difficult it is for outsiders to grasp that a saint could be a member of the UGT (General Union of Workers) during the Civil War and possess a membership card, we gradually decipher the festival while simultaneously revealing features common to many other celebrations deeply rooted in the culture and popular religiosity of the Andalusian people, such as the presence of a communist mayor presiding over the saint's procession and offering cheers.

How to Kill a Cloud

Scientist Hannele Korhonen has one ultimate passion: to work at the top of the atmospheric science community in the world. She wishes to be totally independent and concentrate on her science while maintaining high ethical values. Her life changes dramatically when she is awarded a 1,5 million USD research grant by the United Arab Emirates. The funder expects her to find ways to make the migratory clouds above the UAE to rain on the country suffering of drought. In 1999, for the 30th anniversary of the original Woodstock festival, organizers planned the three-day Woodstock '99 music festival in an abandoned air force base in Rome, New York. Thousands of people came to the festival. Performers such as Kid Rock and Limp Bizkit performed at the festival. However, all was not peace and love. Bad conditions and inflating prices for water led to riots and looting on the last night of the festival.

Madwomen

Documentary about the Chilean poet and Nobel Prize, Gabriela Mistral, and her relationship with the American Doris Dana. Gabriela meets Doris when she thinks she cannot overcome the biggest tragedy of her life: the suicide of her only son. Doris, realizing that her partner will be gone soon, records the conversations with her in their Long Island house. These recordings will be the access to the affective universe of a woman who lives in permanent tension with her inner demons and whose sensitivity and ambition make her the protagonist of her time.
