Don Juan

Twenty-two-year-old Oleg doesn’t live up to his mother Marina’s idea of a real man. She thinks he’s an autistic loafer. He’s enrolled at the University of Nizhny Novgorod and is supposed to be watching online lectures, but his mother says all he actually does is hang around watching TV. Oleg doesn’t have any need for friendships, either. Marina wants him to improve his life and subjects him to a series of unconventional treatments. In one particularly uncomfortable scene, we see the therapist riding him as if he were a horse. Another psychiatrist tells Oleg how useless he is and that he will always be alone. Strangely enough the camera seems to be welcome everywhere, and it closely follows these dramatic developments.

Lost between the Ice

In 1901, Argentine naval officer José María Sobral joins Otto Nordenskjöld’s Swedish scientific expedition to Antarctica. After establishing a winter camp on Snow Hill Island, six men are left stranded when the ship meant to retrieve them never returns. Drawing on Sobral’s diary, this documentary reconstructs their two-year struggle for survival and the Argentine rescue mission led by Lieutenant Julián Irízar aboard the corvette ARA Uruguay.

Unstable Rocks

Geology, animals and the human path flow into this subjective portrait of Portuguese landscapes. Between 2018 and 2023, the director came across different regions and places in this country, either alone or with a group of artists and eco-activists. The footage was shot on the fringes of these groups’ work and activities, reflecting and revealing themes such as nature conservation, ethnography, agriculture or actions against gentrification. The rhythm of Pedras Instáveis is determined by the Bolex camera, but it is slower and contemplative, aligning with the contemporary idea of slowing down.
